Q&A with Quality Engineer and Welding Inspector, Saurav Thapa

Saurav Thapa is a knowledgeable Quality Engineer and a certified Welding Inspector on the Hitachi Rail project with NECIT Services Limited. Get a better idea of Saurav’s role with the following questions and answers:

 

1.     Can you share a brief overview of your professional background and any key roles or achievements from your career?

I am a Quality Engineer specialising in Welding and Inspection, with over eight years of experience in various industries, oil and gas, offshore and onshore construction projects. I hold an MSc in Welding Engineering from Cranfield University and a B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology.

Additionally, I am a certified Inspector in Welding Inspection (CSWIP 3.1), Coating Inspection (NACE level 2), NDT Inspection (PCN-DPT) and Quality Management system (ISO 9001:2015). Throughout my career, I have overseen major construction projects such as power plants, offshore rigs and jackets, commercial buildings and the ongoing Hitachi Acer Project as a Welding Inspector.

2.     What specific skills or expertise do you bring to your role?

I bring a suite of specialised skills that ensure excellence and compliance with quality standards in construction and manufacturing projects. My expertise in welding and inspection is underpinned by an MSc in Welding Engineering and I am certified under CSWIP 3.1.

I am also proficient in NDT techniques and Quality Management system ISO 9001:2015. This background includes a comprehensive understanding of key industry standards, including ISO 3834, EN ISO 15609, 9606, BS EN ISO 15614, 10042, 3452, ASME IX and AWS D1.1.

Proficiency in software tools like AutoCAD, CATIA V5 and Microsoft Office further supports my technical and project management tasks effectively. My ability to interpret complex welding drawings and conduct critical quality procedures ensures that all projects meet rigorous standards while upholding the highest quality and safety benchmarks.

3.     What will be your primary responsibilities in this position?

In my current position as a Welding Inspector on the Hitachi Rail Project, my primary responsibilities include conducting thorough welding inspections and overseeing repair activities on rail cars to ensure they meet stringent safety and quality standards. I actively ensure compliance with standards such as BS EN 15085 and BS EN ISO 10042, which are crucial for the integrity and safety of rail vehicles.

Additionally, I maintain clear and accurate records of inspection and repairs, facilitating effective quality control and adherence to project specifications. My role also involves collaborating with engineers and other project stakeholders to ensure that all welding activities are carried out according to the prescribed procedures and industry best practices.

4.     Why do you feel you were chosen for this role, and what makes you a good fit for our company?

I believe I was chosen for the role of Welding Inspector on the Hitachi Rail project due to my expertise in quality inspection and a strong track record in managing high-safety projects. My educational background and certifications in key areas such as welding and NDT techniques directly align with the rigorous requirements of the project. My experience and commitment to quality and safety and my ability to work effectively with diverse teams align well with the project’s values, making me a good fit for this position.

5.     Are there any particular projects or initiatives you’re excited to work on or lead?

I am particularly eager to further contribute to the Hitachi rail project, which involves detailed inspections and repairs on aluminium car bodies, specifically working with 5xxx and 6xxx series alloys. These materials are crucial for modern rail construction due to their strength-to-weigh properties. This project not only boosts rail safety and efficiency but also enhances my expertise with advanced aluminium alloys, enriching my professional skills and enabling valuable knowledge sharing with my team.

6.     Can you share a personal or interesting fact about yourself, such as hobbies, interests, or unique experiences?

 Outside my professional life, I have a passion for travelling and exploring new destination within my means, which allows me to experience diverse cultures and environments. Cooking is another hobby of mine; I especially enjoy preparing various types of curries and flavourful dishes. To stay active, I engage myself in freehand exercises regularly. While I used to play sports, these days I find joy in watching and supporting my favourite teams in football and cricket.
